Class Structure

Just like an exercise class at the gym, each class begins with a warm-up, follows with a series of 3-5 smelling exercises, and concludes with a cool down. The smelling exercises vary by type of class and ability to smell, but always focus on at least two, most often all three, of the pillars of smell health.

Overall, the aim is to provide you with a wellness experience that pushes you just enough physically, so you can witness improvement with practice, but also incorporates mental and emotional elements for holistic wellbeing.

Class Levels of Difficulty

We recognize that everyone is on their own journey to optimal smell health. Which is why we offer classes not only based on your ability to smell, but also based on your experience and comfort with smell training.

For most, we recommend starting with a beginner class to get familiar with the class format and exercises, and then suggest gradually moving to the intermediate classes for broader training. If you are someone who, personally or professionally, does a lot of smelling every day, then the intermediate classes are a great place to start to flex your smell muscle in new and novel ways.

Class Length & Pace

All classes, unless otherwise noted, are 60 minutes long. Please don’t worry that you’ll be asked to smell the entire time, you will not! The classes are designed to minimize odor and mental fatigue, while still being challenging enough to foster progress.

Depending on which level you choose, classes will run at either a slow (beginner) or moderate (intermediate) pace.

Class Guidelines

All classes are held live and, in the case of online classes will not be recorded, which means there are no replays.

If you book a class and realize you need to reschedule or cancel, you may do so up to 24 hours before the class begins. After that time there are no refunds. Read more about our class terms and conditions.

Class Materials

You will be asked to bring your own smell training kit to class. The kit is not included as part of the class fee and must be acquired separately by the participant.

If you live with smell loss, a weak ability to smell, or smell distortions we assume you are already doing smell training and have a smell training kit you regularly train with. Please bring this kit to any anosmia, hyposmia, or parosmia class. New to smell training? Watch this video to help you get set up, and this video to learn how to smell train.

If you are able to smell, and will be attending a normosmia class, you will be asked to assemble your own kit based on the class you are taking and the theme for the month. Upon booking a class, you will receive a follow-up email with detailed instructions on how to set up your kit. Learn more about the basics of what you will need to make your smell training kit by going here.

Our Mutual Understanding

While the Smell Gym makes every effort to help you improve your smell health, we do not guarantee that you will do so. With consistent and regular practice every day, we believe you should start to see some subjective improvement. We do recommend that you visit your doctor or ENT to get an objective and clinical baseline evaluation of your current ability to smell and then check in regularly to measure your progress. Read our disclaimer for more details.
